Writing your letter

The basics:

Be brief. MPs are busy & get hundreds of letters. One side of paper is about right.

Be factual. Read the endometriosis facts and figures, and think about them before you write. You'll be more confident that way.

Be polite. No-one likes being attacked or getting aggressive letters.

Be natural. Use your own personal style.

Be positive. Write as though your MP is a person who is open to a reasoned argument.

The practicalities:

Find out your MP's name, and address her or him personally: 'Dear Mr Churchill.' (Avoid using: 'Dear MP', 'Dear Winston Churchill', or even 'Dear Winston'...)

  • Adding an individual or personal angle to your letter is more likely to attract their attention and receive a personal reply. So, whether you are someone with endometriosis, a healthcare professional or an employer, you might like to include a section demonstrating why this is an important issue. Remember to keep it brief.

  • Then make your request, clearly, calmly, persuasively.

  • Finally you should round off with a simple conclusion showing that you expect a reply, i.e. 'I look forward to hearing from you.' Sign off with ‘yours sincerely’.

  • Don’t hesitate to include information about endometriosis or one of our leaflets.
