Meeting your local MP

If you would like to discuss your issue/concern with your MP in person, make an appointment explaining why you want to meet: this will allow him or her to prepare.

Tips: Be well prepared, stick to the topic, listen to what they have to say and be polite but firm

MPs are usually at the House of Commons in Westminster from Monday to Thursday, and spend Fridays in their local constituency. If you want to meet at the House of Commons, you must make an appointment in advance. The telephone number is 020 7219 3000; ask for your MP by name.

To find out more about your MP

  • Find the name of your local MP by logging on to www.parliament.uk

  • Similarly you can find your MSP (Member of the Scottish Parliament) by entering your postcode on the Scottish Parliament website www.scottish.parliament.uk

  • You can telephone the House of Commons Information Office - 0207 219 4272

You can go to the library and look them up in Dod’s Parliamentary Companion, which gives a brief profile on each MP. Vacher’s Parliamentary Guide is another source of useful information for finding out which committees your MP is involved with.
